College Softball Finals: Guilford 9–11, Sweet Briar 0–1

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Guilford College swept a Saturday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twinbill against Sweet Briar College. The Quakers took game one from the Vixens, 9-1, in six innings while taking the nightcap, 11-0, in five innings.

Guilford got on the board first in game one when Brittany Donathan (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) doubled to left center field for the game’s first run. Sarah Cutright followed the extra-base hit with a two run home run to right center field. Guilford took advantage of the first of six Sweet Briar errors in the third when Ashley Boteler reached base, increasing the Quakers’ lead, 4-0. The Vixens’ Tessa Crawford put the Vixens on the board in the fourth with a single. The Quakers would close the game with a five-run sixth inning. Cynthia Hayes (Seagrove, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to start the Quakers’ rally. Casey Snead reached on a fielding error to drive in two runs. Allie Nicholson (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) drove in the Quakers’ eighth run on a single. Brittany Grannis took advantage of the sixth and final Sweet Briar error, reaching base to drive in the final run of the game.

Donathan (4-1) picked up the win, retiring all nine batters faced and striking out three. Katie Copeland relieved Donathan and threw two innings, striking out two. Snead threw the final inning, striking out three.

The Quakers jumped on Sweet Briar in the first inning of game two with a five-run inning. Hayes singled to right center field to drive in the first run of the game. Donathan would later drive home Hayes on a ground out. Marty Wilcox doubled to right field for the inning’s third run. Calli Pastor crossed home plate on a passed ball, setting up Rachel Howard to drive in Wilcox on a ground out. The Quakers added another five-run inning in the third with Pastor hitting a single to left field. Howard and Hayes added on to the inning with a two-RBI single a piece.

Pastor (3-2) took the game two win, surrendering only one hit while striking out five batters in three innings. Shaffer relieved Pastor, striking out two batters in one inning. Autumn Yoder relieved Shaffer in the final inning for the senior’s first ever collegiate pitching appearance.

Hayes finished the doubleheader five-for-six with four RBIs and four stolen bases.

The Quakers (16-12, 2-8 ODAC) return to action next Saturday, hosting Lynchburg College at 1 p.m. inside Haworth Field.
