Cason also earned the Guilford Student-Athlete of the Week Award, presented by the Guilford Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Cason, a distance specialist, broke the ODAC record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his sixth-place finish in Saturday’s race at the Duke University Invitational. Cason completed the circuit in nine minutes, 18.71 seconds, nearly a second better than the previous league mark of 9:19.21 set by Washington and Lee University’s Nathan Johnson in 2005. Cason’s mark also bettered his previous school standard of 9:24.48 set in last May’s Duke Twilight meet. His time stands seventh in NCAA Division III through meets of April 6.

The two-time defending ODAC steeplechase champion, Cason owns each of the eight-fastest steeplechase times in school history. He also recorded the Quakers’ fourth-best outdoor time in the mile (4:25.17) this season in March. Cason has Guilford’s fastest times in the 800 (2:00.21) and 1,500-meter runs (4:08.60). His 800 time is seventh-quickest in the ODAC this year and the 1,500 effort is 11th best this season. Cason also ran a leg on Guilford’s top 4×400 relay team this spring.

Coach Danny Cash’s Quakers compete at the North Carolina A&T State University Aggie Invitational this Friday and Saturday (4/12-13).

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among the school’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive and participation in Champs Life Skills, which promotes intercollegiate athletics as a key part of the campus educational program and the student-athlete as an integral part of the student body. Its aim is to increase student-athletes’ community involvement and to engage the greater Guilford community with the athletic department.
