College Softball Finals: Guilford 8—6, Emory & Henry 10—3

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Guilford College rallied after a game one loss, 10-8, against Emory & Henry College to claim the nightcap of the Sunday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader, 6-3.

Emory & Henry obtained the early lead in game two when Hannah Bays connected on a three-run home run to left field. After an Emory & Henry error advanced runners into scoring position, Maggie Shaffer helped the Quakers ease the deficit in the bottom of the second inning with a two-RBI single. Sarah Cutright added her own two-RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, capping a four-RBI afternoon. Laura Hall would bring Cutirght home later in the inning with an infield single. Autumn Yoder hit one of her two doubles in the nightcap in the fourth inning, leading to a Rachel Howard RBI single to right center field that brought home Yoder.

Shaffer (4-4) picked up her second consecutive complete game win in as many days, limiting the Wasps to five hits while striking out four batters. Katie Grimm (5-4) took the loss for the Wasps in three innings of work before being relieved by Taylor Banner in the fourth inning.

Bethany Anderson started the top of the third inning of game one with a two-RBI double to put the Wasps on the board. Bays brought Anderson home on a RBI single to left field to give the Wasps the lead, 3-0. Martha Fluharty then connected on a two run home run to right center field. Veronica Blankenship capped the rally with a RBI single to extend the lead, 6-0. Sloane King (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern Randolph) put the Quakers on the board with a RBI single to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Emory & Henry countered in the fifth with a pair of RBI singles from Blankenship and Taylor Doss. A pair of fielder’s choice plays and a single loaded the bases for the Quakers in the bottom of the fifth inning when Marty Wilcox connected on a grand slam to right center field to cut the Wasps’ lead, 8-5. The next inning, Guilford would produce a game-tying rally when Hall brought in a run on a ground out and Cutright doubled to left field to tie the game, 8-8. Blankenship would cap her four-RBI game one for Emory & Henry with the go-ahead two-RBI double to left center in the top of the seventh.

Calli Pastor (3-3) took the loss throwing the final two innings, striking out two batters. Brittany Donathan (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) started the first two and two thirds innings before Ashley Boteler relieved her in the third. Boteler threw two and a third innings, striking out four batters. Brandy Bryant (3-9) took the complete game win for the Wasps.

The Quakers (18-14, 4-10 ODAC) return to action Wednesday, traveling to Lynchburg, Va. to face Randolph College.
