GC Women’s Lacrosse Comes up Short in USA South Championship Bid

The #3 seed Pride women’s lacrosse team fell short of a USA South Championship on Saturday, losing to #1 seed Christopher Newport 23-8.

The key run of the game came during a 14 minute first half stretch that saw the Captains score nine unanswered goals to grab a comfortable 13-2 lead. Nadya Fedun and Brittany Ziobro each scored in the opening minutes to help Greensboro pull to within 4-2 before the spurt.

The Pride went into the break trailing 14-3 following an own goal committed by Christopher Newport. The Captains opened the second half scoring with three straight goals to extend the advantage to 17-3.

Greensboro made a run of their own, with Kirstin Norris scoring twice and assisting Micaela Sandoval to narrow the gap to 17-6. Despite goals by Alexa Besch and Brittany Ziobro to finish out the game, The Pride would not climb closer then 11 goals for the remainder of the game.

Norris led Greensboro with two goals and two assists, while Ziobro added two goals. Ziobro’s effort pushed her to the top of the single season school record for most points with 99. Also contributing to The Pride effort was Leah Holle with three ground balls, and Norris and Sandoval with two caused turnovers apiece.

Earning All-Tournament honors for The Pride were Ziobro, Fedun, Norris and goalkeeper Kaleigh Hemstock.

With the defeat, Greensboro concludes the 2013 season with a record of 9-10.
