Elon’s Watson Garners Second SoCon Softball Player of the Week Accolade

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon softball senior Tomeka Watson was named the Southern Conference’s Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday, April 15. This is the second time that Watson has earned the conference’s weekly accolade this season.

Watson batted .667 (8-for-12) in the Phoenix’s four games this past week and helped the maroon and gold earn its first SoCon series win of the season last weekend versus Western Carolina. The Jackson, Ga., native hit safely in three of those contests while adding five runs scored, two doubles and two stolen bases to her stat line.

The left fielder was 2-for-3 with a double on Wednesday, April 10, at No. 25 North Carolina and went 3-for-4 in the opening game of the series versus Western Carolina with two stolen bases on Saturday, April 13. In the series finale on Sunday, April 14, Watson went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a double to help the Phoenix defeat the Catamounts, 4-1, and clinch the series in the rubber match contest.

Watson is currently leading the league in several offensive categories this season, including batting average (.467), home runs (14), hits (56) and slugging percentage (.900). She also paces the SoCon in stolen bases (22-for-22) and needs three more to become the second player is school history with 100 or more stolen bases.

The Phoenix returns to league action this weekend at Samford. The three-game series will kickoff on Saturday, April 20, with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. EST before concluding the series on Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m. EST.
