HPU Men’s Golf Sits 12th After 36 Holes in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team shot a combined 586 to sit in 12th place after 36 holes at the Coca-Cola Invitational hosted by Wofford at the Country Club of Spartanburg in South Carolina. Senior Chase Wilson is tied for eighth place with a score of 141.

High Point carded a 287 over the first 18 holes this morning and followed it with a 299 in the afternoon round. The Panthers are 12th out of 14 teams and currently sit ahead of Big South opponents Charleston Southern and Longwood.

“We played extremely well in the morning round,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “In the afternoon we made some unforced errors and gave away a few strokes. Tomorrow we have to play smart and focused and stay committed to every shot. We are within six strokes of sixth place and I am confident we can move up is we come out focused and aggressive.”

Wilson carded a 68 in the first round and a 73 in the afternoon to finish the day in eighth place with a total of 141. Sophomore Charles Valluzzo is six strokes back of Wilson with a 147 (70-77). He is tied for 41st place overall.

Freshman Tommy Dillon shot a career-low 74 on the first 18 and picked up one stroke in the afternoon for a final score of 149. Freshman McKay Tye also carded a 149 for the day (75-74). Dillon and Tye are tied for 53rd.

Senior Brian Sullivan rounded out scoring for High Point with a 160 (79-81).

High Point will tee off for the third and final round on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. The Panthers are paired up with Charleston Southern, Longwood and Stetson.
