College Men’s Lacrosse Final – #13 Roanoke 16, Guilford 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Tyler Cockey scored three first-half goals and an assist in Roanoke College’s 16-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win at Guilford College Wednesday night.

Ranked 13th in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division III Coaches’ Poll, the Maroons (12-3, 8-0 ODAC) scored the game’s final eight goals to remain unbeaten in league play.

Guilford (7-7, 2-5 ODAC) took a 2-0 lead before Cockey put the Maroons on the scoreboard with 6:10 left in the first quarter. His unassisted goal set off a 5-0 Roanoke run, which opened a 5-2 second-quarter lead. Guilford’s Duncan Fitzgerald and Chase Clausen scored 21 seconds apart to bring the Quakers to within 5-4 with 6:47 left in the half.

Cockey’s third score came off a Will Pilat assist 2:38 before halftime and gave the Maroons a 6-4 edge at the intermission.

Roanoke ratcheted up its defense in the second half and held Guilford to a Daniel Hughey goal in the third quarter over the final 30 minutes. Pilat collected two goals and an assist in the half in which Roanoke outscored Guilford, 10-1. Maroons goaltenders Charles Pease and Mike Hardon combined on four saves.

Cockey and Pilat were two of 11 different goal scorers for Roanoke. Conner DuBois and Will Carter also scored twice and Mike Hayden had three assists. Pease and Wes Pancoast both picked up four ground balls.

Hughey had a goal and an assist for Guilford. Teammate Adam Fiore tallied two assists. Sam Newland won eight face-offs and Nick Huckins made picked up four ground balls.

The Quakers visit league-rival Shenandoah University Saturday (4/20).
