College Softball Finals: Randolph 3—9, Guilford 0—8

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Guilford College fell in a Wednesday afternoon Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader, losing the first game, 3-0, and the second game in walkoff fashion, 9-8, in nine innings.

Randolph held Guilford to just three hits in game one. The WildCats’ Patti Vinson drove in a run on a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brittney Via and Jess Sanabria both drove in a run a piece on a pair of sacrifice flies. Laura Hall, Rachel Howard, and Marty Wilcox each tallied a hit a piece for the Quakers.

Maggie Shaffer (4-5) took the complete game loss for the Quakers throwing six innings and striking out six. Logan Carter took the complete game shutout win for Randolph, striking out eight.

The Quakers jumped on Randolph in the first inning of game two when Sarah Cutright doubled to drove in a run, setting up Ashley Boteler to drive Cutright home on a three run home run to center field. The WildCats countered in the second when Vinson reached on an error to drive in a run and Erin Wehrhan drove in two runs on a single. Guilford answered in the third when Rachel Howard singled to left center field and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the Quaker lead, 6-3. Wilcox added to the lead in the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field. Randolph cut away at the lead in the sixth when Wehrhan singled down the left field line to drive in a run. Brittany Willingham added to the rally with a RBI single to right center field. After a pair of fielder’s choice plays in the bottom of the seventh, Wehrhan doubled down the left field line to drive in two runs to send the game into extra innings, 7-7. Emily VanHaneghan singled down the left field line in the top of the ninth inning to put the Quakers on top, 8-7. Ashton Ewers tied the game for Randolph in the bottom of the ninth when she reached on a throwing error. With two outs, Jessica Nowak brought in the game winning run for the WildCats on a single to left field.

Casey Snead (3-2) took the complete game loss for the Quakers, throwing eight and two thirds innings, striking out five and surrendering only three earned runs. Carter took her second win of the day in relief for Randolph, throwing the final two innings. Sanabria threw the first five innings in a no-decision start. Via relieved Sanabria in the sixth and threw two scoreless innings.

The Quakers (18-16, 4-12 ODAC) return to action Saturday, traveling to Winchester, Va. to face Shenandoah University.
