Scouting the Outdoor Championships
The Phoenix will be one of 12 teams in competition in this weekend’s meet and look to improve upon its fifth place standing from a year ago. Elon scored 102 total points in last year’s championships while setting numerous school records and claiming the individual title in the 400-meters.

The maroon and gold currently hold the conference’s top mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the hammer throw and javelin throw. Freshmen Caroline McCaslin set a school-record in the 3K-steeplechase with a time of 10:34.87 at the Duke Invitational on April 6. She is currently 29th on the NCAA East Regional list. The maroon and gold trio of McCaslin, Tereza Novotna and Emily Tryon holds the top three league marks in steeplechase.

Sophomore Suzanne Martin has the league’s best toss in the javelin throw with a mark of 141’7” (43.15m) and setting a new school-record last weekend at the Joe Hilton Invitational and finishing as the runner-up. Martin has finished in the top-five of the event in four outdoor meets this season, including three runner-up finishes.

Junior throwers Charlise Morgan and Kimberlyn Holt are having outstanding 2013 outdoor campaigns this season. Holt set a school-record in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 175’3” (53.42m) at the Wake Forest Open this season, the best distance in the SoCon this season. Morgan had a program-best heave of 46’1.5” (14.06m) at the Joe Hilton Invitational this past weekend in the shot put, the second-best throw in the conference.

In other distance events, junior Allyson Oram is second in the league in the 5,000-meters with a time of 16:59.38 at the Raleigh Relays, setting a new school-record in the race. Haylee Dawe also established a new school-mark at Raleigh in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 36:15.16.

Along with McCaslin, Megan Kirschling and Sydney Griffin have stood out in their freshmen campaign this season. The duo earned All-Freshman SoCon accolades during the indoor season and has made an impact on the program’s record books in 2013. Kirschling set the school-record in the high jump at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational with a cleared height of 5’7.25”, second-best in the conference.

In her first collegiate outdoor meet, Griffin set the new school-mark in the 100-meter hurdles after clocking in at 14.13 at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Marietta, Ga., native also has a top-10 SoCon performance in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.86 from the Wake Forest Open.

Among the others joining Griffin in the hurdles will be junior Veronica Luedke. Luedke became the most recent Elon recipient of the league’s Outdoor Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, April 17, joining Kirschling, Griffin and McCaslin from earlier in the year. Luedke clocked in a time of 1:01.55 at the Joe Hilton Invitational, the second-fastest time on the program’s all-time performance list and the second-best performance in the SoCon.

Two-time defending indoor pentathlon champion Louise Prevoteau will compete in the long jump for the Phoenix. The sophomore had a leap of 18’9.75” (5.73m) at the Wake Forest Open, the second-best mark in the conference.

The 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championships is slated to begin on Saturday, April 20, with the decathlon events at 8 a.m. The meet will conclude on Sunday, April 21, with the awards ceremony tentatively set for 5:45 p.m.
