College Women’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 11, Washington and Lee 6

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lily Colley (Wells, Maine/Wells) and E’leyna Garcia (Plantation, Fla./Pine Coast Prep) both scored four goals in Guilford College’s 11-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse victory over Washington and Lee University Saturday.

Senior goalie Liza Mettler made nine saves as the Quakers (15-1, 10-0 ODAC) completed the ODAC’s first 10-0 regular season and clinched the top seed in the upcoming league tournament. The victory also snapped the Generals’ 24-game winning streak over Guilford, which dated to 1990.

The Quakers overcame a second-half deficit for the second straight game and extended its school-record winning streak to 14 games. Catherine Klinedinst’s three first-half goals and Washington and Lee’s patient offense contributed to the Generals’ 4-2 halftime lead.

Colley fed her sister, Becca, with the second-half’s opening score four minutes into the period. The junior’s tally triggered a 7-0 Guilford run that featured two goals apiece by Lily Colley, Garcia and Eleanora Keene. Lily Colley scored the tying goal with 20:56 left in regulation before netting the go-ahead score off a free-position shot with 14:57 left. Garcia’s goal with 45 seconds left in the game marked her 96th of the season, which broke the ODAC’s season goals mark set by Bridgewater College’s Amy Rafalski in 1998.

Mettler was a wall for Guilford, especially in the second half. The senior moved into second place on the school’s career saves list (508) and stopped seven shots in the second half. She made consecutive stops on Meade Brewster and Margaret Klein 14 seconds apart early in half, which helped keep the Generals off the scoreboard until Margaret Pascale tallied with 2:39 left. Washington and Lee scored on just one of seven free-position shots and Mettler stopped three of them.

Lily Colley scored a game-high six points on four goals and two assists for Guilford. She also picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover. Keene added three points with two goals and an assist, plus a game-high four draw controls. Becca Colley scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers, both team highs.

Klinedinst’s three goals paced the Generals (6-9, 6-3 ODAC). Pascale scored twice and Carly Taglienti added a goal and an assist. Leanne Stone picked up a game-high five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Goalie Cara Milligan had four saves, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Quakers will host an ODAC Tournament semifinal game April 27. The tournament pairings and schedule will be announced April 21.
