The Appalachian State Spring Game from www.goasu.com:
Black tops Gold 12-3

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University football saw its defense dominate on both squads at the 2013 Spring Game on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

The Mountaineers, who played in front of 3,500 fans on a brisk but sunny day in Boone, were split into Black and Gold squads for the 80-minute contest. The game was split into two, 40-minute quarters with a 10-minute break in between.

Doug Middleton highlighted the afternoon with two interceptions for the Gold while teammates Ronald Blair and Denzel Ward tallied 2.5 sacks apiece.

The Gold notched eight sacks on the day to go along with the two interceptions and 12 tackles for loss while the Black finished with nine sacks. Deuce Robinson led the Black with 2.5 sacks while Patrick Blalock tallied two.

Both offenses struggled during the game as the two teams combined for just 441 yards of total offense. Paul Magloire ran for a game-high 57 yards on 15 carries for the Black while Ricky Fergerson had 53 yards on 12 carries for the Gold and added 33 yards on four receptions.

Kalik Barnes finished 19-of-28 for 154 yards for the Black and Logan Hallock went 22-of-33 for 209 yards in leading the Gold.

Simms McElfresh led all receivers with a game-high eight catches for 84 yards for the Gold team while Andrew Peacock hauled in five catches for 51 yards for the Black.

Wake Forest Spring Game also dominated by Defense…..

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Chad Hedlund’s 39-yard field goal was the only scoring as Wake Forest’s defense dominated play in Saturday’s annual spring game at BB&T Field.

Head coach Jim Grobe led the Deacons through a 70 minute scrimmage in front of 4,200 fans at BB&T Field. The scrimmage included 68 plays with 32 on the round and 36 through the air.

Incumbent starting quarterback Tanner Price completed nine of 16 passes for 82 yards while Patrick Thompson connected on four of seven for 32 yards. Kevin Sousa, Pat Long and Tyler Cameron also saw action during the scrimmage.

The defense had four interceptions on the day with Hunter Williams, Ryan Janvion, Merrill Noel and A.J. Marshall each recording one pick.

“The defense was awesome today,” said Grobe. “I thought they played great. We really dumbed the defense down today, we didn’t blitz and we didn’t play a lot of different coverages. It’s amazing how good they played when they know what to do and didn’t have a lot of thinking going on. That ought to be a lesson for our coaches.”
