Elon Track & Field Finishes Fourth at SoCon Outdoor Championships

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Elon track and field team wrapped up competition today, April 21, at the 2013 Southern Conference Championships. The Phoenix could not maintain its second-place standing from the opening day, but improved from last year’s results by finishing fourth overall after recording 111 points, just 1.5 points shy from third.

“We did really well today,” said Phoenix head coach Mark Elliston. “We came in today with some injuries and some struggles, but we came together and battled to stay in a fight to potentially get third.”

Allyson Oram earned All-SoCon honors with her runner-up finish in the 5,000-meter run. Oram ran the race ina time of 17:20.08. Haylee Dawe joined Oram in the top-10 after clocking a time of 18:05.89.

Freshmen Sydney Griffin earned a spot on both the All-SoCon and the league’s All-Freshmen team after clocking a time of 14.22 in the 100-meter hurdles to finish second. Junior Veronica Luedke also received All-SoCon recognition with her second-place standing in the 400-meter hurdles and a time of 1:02.7.

In the women’s high jump, freshman Megan Kirschling was edged out for the title by Samford’s Chenelle Terry, but was second overall with a cleared height of 1.72m. Haley Laird was sixth after clearing the bar at 1.57m. Like Griffin, Kirschling also was recognized on both the league’s All-SoCon and All-Freshmen teams.

Emily Tryon had a top-five standing in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:39.84. Tereza Novotna and Caroline McCaslin just finished outside of the top-10 with times of 4:44.05 and 4:44.35, respectively.

Charlise Morgan was second in the women’s shot put with a toss of 14.08m, breaking her previous school-record by .02m. Morgan became the 10th athlete on the squad to earn All-SoCon honors.
