College Baseball News – John Macon Smith Wins ODAC Scholar Athlete of the Year, Quakers Place Four on All-ODAC Teams

FOREST, Va.—Guilford College’s John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) garnered the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)/Farm Bureau Insurance Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors Friday. Smith also joined Kent Peterson and Corey Wallace (Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Senior) in earning First Team All-ODAC honors while Nathan Fulbright (Salisbury, N.C/East Rowan) rounded out Guilford’s honorees, claiming Third Team All-ODAC honors.

Smith, a junior outfielder, finished the season batting .385 in 20 ODAC games, standing 15th in conference. His .453 on-base percentage in conference games stands 10th in the ODAC while his 19 runs scored also finished 10th. Smith’s 17 RBI in ODAC play stands in a tie for 13th place.

Overall, Smith hit .392 with a team-leading 148 at-bats. The junior outfielder’s batting average (.392) stood sixth in the ODAC. Smith currently stands eighth in the conference in RBI (33) and fifth in stolen bases (13). His four home runs ranks second on the team while his slugging percentage (.554) ranked third. Smith currently stands in a tie forr third in the ODAC in base hits (58). Smith closed out the year hitting safely in the final eight games of the year, including hitting seven-for-nine with a double and three RBI in the season’s final twinbill against Randolph-Macon College.

Peterson, a senior third baseman, lead the ODAC in batting average (.455) in games against conference opponents. Peterson’s on-base percentage in conference play (.505) led the team and finished second in the ODAC. Peterson also led the team in hits (35) while finishing in a tie for second place in the ODAC in conference play.

Peterson finished the overall season batting .391, good for seventh in the ODAC while his on-base percentage (.455) stands eighth in the conference. His 52 hits finished second on the team while his 29 RBI finished third. Peterson hit safely in 31 of his 34 games played while amassing a 20-game hit streak in the middle of the season. Peterson also reached base in the final 29 games of the season.

Wallace’s slugging percentage in conference play (.703) stands second in the ODAC thanks to three triples against conference foes, also second in the ODAC. His three home runs stood ninth in the conference while his on-base percentage (.449) stood 12th.

Overall, Wallace leads the ODAC in triples with five while leading the team in home runs (7), good for fourth in the ODAC. His slugging percentage (.687) stands second in the ODAC. His 31 RBI, second on the team, stands 13th in conference. The junior second baseman drove in a season-high six RBI against Emory & Henry College April 16th while finishing the season with a RBI in his final five games played.

Fulbright earned third team honors at designated hitter with an on-base percentage in conference play (.500) stood third in the ODAC while his batting average (.390) stood 12th in conference. Fulbright tied Smith for 13th in the ODAC in RBI against conference foes (17).

Starting the season as a reserve catcher, Fulbright finished his freshman year strong with 11 RBI in the month of April, including six against Emory & Henry College on a four-for-four day at the plate where he connected on two doubles. The freshman hit safely in 10 of his final 12 games played.

The honorees helped the Quakers to a 20-18 record (10-10 ODAC). The Quakers are scheduled to return 32 players for 2014, including Fulbright, Smith, and Wallace.

  1. They can return all the players ,but without proper direction they will be in same hole the are now, not making the tourney.They need some new leaders,all the talent,Just SOS different year.Great bunch of players,fine young men.Just need some talent calling the shots.

  2. Congrats to all the players on the awards, But you are right ,they do need some new leaders here at Guilford,This team has way to much talent not to be winning, and not just playing 500 or below ball,only got above 500 in last series of year.if they keep same,it will be same outcome.
