College Men’s Lacrosse News – Guilford’s Huckins Lands All-ODAC Honor

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College’s Nick Huckins (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) earned Third Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors according to a vote of the league’s head men’s lacrosse coaches, the league office announced Friday. He was the lone Quaker so honored and is Guilford’s first All-ODAC defender since Tyler Zivic ’10 in 2010.

Huckins, a 6-1, 205-pound sophomore, paced the Quakers with 74 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers in 16 games. He also scored his first two college goals and had the most points among the team’s defensemen (2). His 74 ground balls are the most by a Guilford student since Won Hill ’04 had 87 pickups in 2004. Huckins ranks sixth among ODAC leaders in ground balls and fifth in caused turnovers through games of April 30. His 1.89 caused turnovers per outing stand 68th among NCAA Division III leaders through matches of April 28. Huckins’ 30 caused turnovers are the most by a Quaker since Gates Benson ’09 had 31 in 2009.

Huckins led Guilford in ground balls in seven games, including the season finale against Virginia Wesleyan College when he made a game- and career-best nine pickups. He led the team in caused turnovers a club-best eight times and forced five miscues, a personal best, in a Mar. 9 win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers’ posted an 8-8 overall record (3-6 ODAC). Huckins is one of as many as 27 letter winners who may return in 2014.
