Elon’s Nester, White Sweep SoCon Weekly Softball Awards

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon softball’s Carleigh Nester and Chelsea White were named the Southern Conference’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday, May 6. This is the second consecutive weekly league honor for Nester and the first for White.

The duo was instrumental in helping the Phoenix go 5-0 against its competition last week. After earning her first career SoCon Player of the Week accolade last Monday, April 29, Nester continued her strong play as the junior batted .417 (5-for-14) for the week with a pair of home runs, four runs scored, four RBI and a double. She hit 2-for-3 with a run scored, a double and a home run in the Phoenix’s 4-2 win over North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, May 1. She went 1-of-2, scored two runs, drove in two and added another home run against Chattanooga on Saturday, May 4, in the Phoenix’s 6-4 win against the Lady Mocs. The Kernersville, N.C., native drove in the game-winning run on a sac fly in the Phoenix’s 4-3 win over the Lady Mocs on Sunday, May 5, hitting 1-for-2 in the contest, scoring a run and drawing a walk.

White picked up wins in three of the Phoenix’s five contest last week, going 3-0 with an ERA of 1.87 in 15.0 innings of action. The Salisbury, N.C., native struck out a career-high eight batters against North Carolina A&T on Wednesday, May 1, and earned the complete game, two-hit shutout 1-0 victory. She fanned another five batters in the Phoenix’s 6-4 win against Chattanooga on Saturday, May 4. White picked up the win in the Phoenix’s walk off 4-3 victory against the Lady Mocs on Sunday, May 5 after pitching a scoreless inning in relief.

In her last eight appearances (seven starts), White has a 5-3 record with an ERA of 1.97, a pair of complete game shutout wins and 27 strikeouts in 42.2 innings of work.

Elon returns to the field on Wednesday, May 8, for the opening game of the 2013 Southern Conference Softball Tournament Championships in Greensboro, N.C. The eighth-seeded Phoenix will face ninth-seeded Samford in the single-elimination game at 9 a.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
