High Point Volleyball Schedule Set for 2013

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University head coach Jason Oliver announced the volleyball team’s 2013 schedule on Monday. HPU begins the regular season with tournaments at South Carolina, Cleveland State and Georgia Southern. The Panthers will host the High Point University Classic for the fifth straight year at the Millis Center.

“This is a great, competitive schedule for our team,” Oliver said. “We put together a schedule that allows us to play teams with different styles. It will not only help with the development of the program but prepare us for a challenging Big South slate. I love the makeup of the 2013 team. Our chemistry is at an all-time high and that will be key to a successful season.”

North Carolina A&T, Murray State and Davidson will travel to High Point for the fifth-annual HPU Classic on Sept. 20-21. The tournament will kickoff at 5 p.m. on Sept. 20 with HPU facing North Carolina A&T. on Sept. 21 the Panthers will face Murray State at 1 p.m. and Davidson at 7 p.m.

High Point opens the season at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by South Carolina on Aug. 30. South Carolina State and Florida International will also take part in the tournament. The Panthers will also play in the Cleveland State Tournament on Sept. 6 and 7 and the Georgia Southern Tournament on Sept. 13 and 14.

The Panthers’ first home game is Sept. 10 when Elon comes to the Millis Center at 7 p.m. HPU will also host VCU on Sept. 17 before the HPU Classic begins.

Big South action begins on Sept. 27 when Campbell comes to High Point for a 7 p.m. match. After a weekend at the beach with games at Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern the Panther return home for four straight games from Oct. 11-19.

High Point will host the Chanticleers in the final regular-season game of the season at 2 p.m. on Nov. 16.

Presbyterian College will host the 2013 Big South Conference Championship in Clinton, S.C. beginning Nov. 21 and running through Nov. 24.

High Point returns All-Big South honoree Kristin Heldt as well as All-Freshman team selection Annemarie Chin for 2013. Middle blocker Michelle Chakirelis, outside hitter Chelsea Davis and setter Maddie Simpson all come back to the starting lineup. HPU will also add four newcomers to the team for 2013, including middle blocker Katie Vincent, setter Val Jeffery, outside hitter Megan Kennedy and right side hitter Crystal Widom.
