Elon Track & Field – Throwers Shine at NC State Last Chance Meet

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Elon women’s track and field team captured a couple of victories today as the Phoenix competed at the NC State Last Chance Qualifier on Friday, May 10. Junior Kimberlyn Holt and sophomore Suzanne Martin won titles in the hammer and javelin throws, respectively, and broke their own school-records in their events at the Paul Derr Track Stadium.

“The girls did well today as we set a couple of school and personal records,” said Phoenix head coach Mark Elliston. “Some of the results today were good, but we definitely want to improve overall as we head into the North Carolina A&T meet on Sunday.”

Holt had a toss of 175’7” (53.52m) for her third straight win in the hammer throw. The Viola, Kan., native surpassed her previous program-record of 175’4” (53.45m) that she established at the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on April 21. Holt’s mark currently sits atop the conference’s performance list on the year.

Martin earned her second javelin event victory of the year with a heave of 142’9” (43.51m), breaking her former school-record mark of 141’7” (43.15m). The Hummelstown, Pa., native achieved the feat on her second to last throw and also holds the top mark in the SoCon this season.

“Both Kim and Suzanne have been doing well all season long,” said Elliston. “They came through when they needed to and have been staying consistent and improving from each meet.”

Freshman Megan Kirschling also competed for the Phoenix and cleared the bar at 5’5.75” (1.67m) in the high jump. Charlise Morgan had a throw of 45’9.25″ (13.95m) in the shot put and finished as the runner-up. Veronica Luedke clocked a time of 1:03.26 in the 400-meter hurdles and crossed the line in fourth.

The Phoenix will return to field on Sunday, May 12, and compete at the North Carolina A&T Last Chance meet in Greensboro, N.C.
