Norton Breaks School’s 5,000 Meter Record, Cason Places Third in Steeplechase at Swarthmore Final Qualifier

CHESTER, Pa.—-Chad Norton broke his own school record in the 5,000 meter run at the Swarthmore College Final Qualifying Meet held in Chester, Pa. on the campus of Widener University Monday Night.

Norton (14:47.29) broke his own school record by 7.08 seconds, placing 15th overall. Norton’s mark was the fourth best NCAA Division III time in a field where half of the runners ahead of Norton ran unattached. The junior’s record breaking run is his third sub-15 minute mark in the 5,000 meter run this season, which stands as the second best time in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). His time was just .64 seconds away from cracking the top-50 5,000 meter marks in Division III this season.

David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) (9:25.00) placed third overall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and ran the second best time among Division III runners. His time was the third fastest in the ODAC this year and the fifth fastest in program history. Cason still holds the ODAC’s best mark in the event this season, which is the 28th best mark among Division III runners in 2013. The junior broke the ODAC all-time record as well as the school’s all-time mark in the event twice in 2013, breaking his own records last week at the Duke Twilight with a time of 9:15.34.
