Elon’s McCaslin Qualifies For NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary

ELON, N.C. – Elon women’s track and field freshman Caroline McCaslin will represent the Phoenix at the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary in Greensboro, N.C., on May 23-25. McCaslin becomes the first member of the program since 2011 to compete in the NCAA preliminary round after qualifying among the top-48 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

“This is a great accomplishment for Caroline,” said Elon head cross country and assistant track and field coach Christine Engel. “She truly had a standout freshman season and we are excited that she gets to represent Elon at the next level and compete against some of the top runners in the nation.”

McCaslin set a school-record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Duke Invitational on April 6, after clocking a league-best time of 10:34.87. The Prospect, Ky., native claimed the Southern Conference title in the event at the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championships on April 20, in Statesboro, Ga., and made the SoCon All-Freshman team while gathering all-conference laurels.

McCaslin becomes the first member of the track and field program to qualify for the NCAA East Regional since Veronica Day and Amy Salek competed in the preliminary round in 2011.
