NCHSAA State 4-A Boy’s Dual Team Tennis Championship

MILLBROOK EDGES R.J. REYNOLDS 5-4 IN NCHSAA 4-A MEN’S DUAL TEAM TENNIS

GREENSBORO — Raleigh Millbrook stopped the Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds bid for a fourth consecutive North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s dual team tennis championship on Saturday with a hard-fought 5-4 decision.

The match began Saturday morning at the Burlington Tennis Center on outdoor courts and five of six singles were completed before the rain came. The finals then moved indoors to the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

The number-two doubles was the final match completed and proved to be the margin of victory as Logan Weber and Austin Cobb of Millbrook beat Nick McDaniel and John Kretzschmar 10-3 to clinch the state title.

The teams split the six singles matches, with three of them going to the tiebreaker after split sets.

Millbrook was making its fourth trip to the championship but first since 2009 when it beat R.J. Reynolds in the final. Millbrook finished the season 19-3 while Reynolds wound up 20-5 in dual matches.
