HPU Athletics Collects Nearly 1,500 Pounds of Food for Salvation Army

The High Point University Athletic Department recently combined to collect 1,492 pounds of food to donate to the Salvation Army. It was part of the Big South Conference’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee annual Community Service Initiative.

“It’s great to see the contributions our student-athletes make to the High Point community throughout the year,” said HPU Athletic Director Craig Keilitz. “Our student-athletes are always talking about how rewarding it is to give back, whether it’s working with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Miracle League of High Point, the Special Olympics or our food drives this year.”

HPU’s administrative staff donated 541 pounds of food for the donation. The Panthers’ top team was the women’s lacrosse team at 255 pounds, just edging the women’s track team’s 241-pound donation. High Point’s women’s soccer and volleyball teams each collected 125 pounds of food for donations.

Members of each school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee vote to decide the Big South’s community service initiative each year. Women’s track & field team members Kelsey Hunt and Colleen Hollowood, who are members of HPU’s SAAC, volunteered to count and weigh the collected food.

In December, High Point’s Athletic Department spearheaded the University’s Holiday Food Drive, collecting 2,815 items that totaled 3,009 pounds for the Salvation Army.
