SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE ANNOUNCES ROSTERS FOR 54TH ANNUAL SAL ALL-STAR GAME

ST. PETERSBURG, FL–Eric Krupa, president of the South Atlantic League, has announced the rosters for the 54th Annual SAL All-Star Game, scheduled to be played on June 18, 2013, at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, New Jersey, home of the Lakewood BlueClaws.

For the Northern Division, three teams each placed six players on the roster. The Hickory Crawdads provide starting pitcher C.J. Edwards, third baseman Joey Gallo and center fielder Lewis Brinson while the West Virginia Power provide first baseman Stetson Allie, shortstop Dilson Herrera and right fielder Josh Bell. The Hagerstown Suns also placed six players on the team. The Kannapolis Intimidators contribute two players, including second baseman Micah Johnson and left fielder Jason Coats. The Greensboro Grasshoppers and host Lakewood BlueClaws each contribute two players, with Greensboro’s Viosergy Rosa named as the designated hitter and Lakewood’s Chace Numata named as the starting catcher. The Delmarva Shorebirds contribute one player to the Northern Division roster.

Hagerstown manager Tripp Keister will skipper the Norther Division All-Stars. Keister is in his first season in the league, and his second year as a manager in the Minor Leagues. Keister will be assisted by Lakewood manager Mickey Morandini and Hagerstown pitching coach Franklin Bravo. Handling the trainer’s duties for the Northern Division will be Lakewood’s Mickey Kozack.

For the Southern Division, the Augusta GreenJackets led the division with six players, including starting third baseman Mitchell Delfino and center fielder Jesus Galindo. The Savannah Sand Gnats provide five players, including catcher Kevin Plawecki and first baseman Jayce Boyd. The Asheville Tourists contribute four players, including starting shortstop Rosell Herrera, who received more votes than any other player on either squad. Asheville also contributes starting right fielder Derek Jones. The Charleston RiverDogs and Rome Braves each contribute three players. Rome’s Levi Hyams will start at second base and Josh Elander will start in left field. Charleston’s Rafael De Paula will be the starting pitcher for the Southern Division. The Greenville Drive and the Lexington Legends will each contribute two players, with Greenville’s David Chester being voted in as the designated hitter.

Savannah skipper Luis Rojas will manage the Southern Division squad. Rojas is in his third season as a manager, and his eighth overall as a member of the New York Mets organization. Rojas will be joined on the Southern Division coaching staff by Savannah pitching coach Frank Viola, Augusta hitting coach Hector Borg and Savannah strength and conditioning coach Jason Griffin. Savannah’s Tom Truedson will serve as the team’s trainer.

Both all-star teams will be represented by 25 players, selected by the votes of the team’s managers and coaching staffs, local media and front office executives. FirstEnergy Park will be hosting its second SAL All-Star game. The other time the All-Star Game was held in Lakewood was in 2002, when the Northern Division defeated the Southern Division 5-2.. The annual SAL All-Star Game dates to 1960, when the All-Stars defeated the Salisbury club, 6-2, in Newton, NC.

“We have a great selection of players and a great stadium to showcase the event,” said Krupa. “Each year, the expectations are raised and each year the host club meets or exceeds them. Co-owner Joe Finley, General Manager Brandon Marano and the staff in Lakewood have been working for more than a year in order to live up to that tradition and host one of the great events on our baseball calendar.”

A variety of events have been scheduled in Lakewood along with the SAL All-Star Game. On Monday, June 17th, there will be an opportunity for fans to get autographs from and pictures with the SAL All-Stars at FirstEnergy Park, followed by a Celebrity Hitting Contest, featuring talent from TV, professional sports, entertainment and more. On Tuesday June 18th, the Class of 2013 SAL Hall of Fame inductees will be honored in a pre-game ceremony and the first pitch of the 2013 SAL All-Star Game is scheduled at 7:05pm.
