NC State Advances to College World Series

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State advanced to its first College World Series since 1968 by winning the longest super regional game in history, 5-4, in 17 innings over Rice on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The Wolfpack (49-14) tied the school record for most wins in a season, but they had to do it with a riveting three-run ninth to force extra innings. Rice (44-20) took a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, and extended it to 2-0 with another in the sixth. A third solo home run made the score 3-1 through seven after the Pack’s first run of the game in the top half.

The Owls padded that lead to 4-1 in the eighth, before State rallied with three runs in the ninth to knot the score. Both teams stayed scoreless through the next seven innings before the Pack scored the winning run in the top of the 17th.

NC State centerfielder Brett Williams finished 3-for-7 with a run-scoring double in the top of the final inning. Tarran Senay scored on that play due to a fielding error in right field, part of his 2-for-7 outing with an RBI and a double. Trea Turner went 3-for-8 with a run. Jake Fincher improved to 61-for-63 on reaching base at least once in games this season.

Ethan Ogburn (5-3) captured the win on five shutout innings after a 77-minute rain delay. Reliever Chris Overmanpitched 2 2/3 innings before the delay, and induced a line-drive double play from the first batter after the delay, before handing the ball to Ogburn. Ogburn proceeded to mow down the first nine batters he faced, in order, and finished by retiring 14 of 17 with six strikeouts.

Gamecocks Force Game Three With Shutout

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – Jordan Montgomery pitched a four-hit shutout Sunday, leading South Carolina past North Carolina 8-0 in the NCAA super regionals for the Tar Heels’ most lopsided loss this year.

Joey Pankake drove in two runs during a five-run second inning for the Gamecocks (43-19), who forced a decisive game Monday in the best-of-3 series with the winner going to the College World Series.

The Tar Heels (56-10) won Saturday’s opener 6-5 on an RBI single in the ninth, putting them within a win of returning to Omaha, Neb., for the sixth time in eight seasons.

But the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament got a short outing from a starting pitcher and fell behind early for the second straight day.

Landon Lassiter had two hits for the Tar Heels, who will be the home team in Monday’s deciding game three.
