Appalachian State Mountaineers welcome in Purdue-transfer Jacob Lawson(ORMA)

*****At one time or another, Jacob Lawson was a teammate with four members from this past season’s Appalachian State basketball roster…..Mike Neal(Northern Guilford and Oak Ridge Military Academy), Jonathan Frye(Northern Guilford), Jay Canty(Oak Ridge Military Academy) and Michael Obacha(ORMA)……*****

from the Appalachian State athletics site at www.goasu.com:

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University men’s basketball head coach Jason Capel has announced the addition of former Purdue forward Jacob Lawson (Reidsville, N.C./Oak Ridge Military) to the Mountaineer roster on Wednesday.

“We are really excited to add Jacob to our basketball program,” said Capel. “Jacob is a young man who comes from a great family and I feel will be big part of what we continue to build. He brings great athleticism to both ends of the court and the ability to change ends with great quickness. Defensively, Jacob will be a force for us with his knack for blocking and altering shots, his ability to defend multiple positions and rebounding the ball, both above the rim and out of his area.”

Lawson, who will sit out the 2013-14 season in accordance with NCAA transfer rules, will have two years of eligibility remaining after appearing in 58 games for Matt Painter’s Boilermakers over the past two seasons.

  1. It is amazing when you look back at that first ORMA basketball team and how potentially good that program could and would have been if Stan did not have the programs that he generated. That program would have been competing with the Oak Hill’s of the world year end and out. It is also interesting to see so many of those kids move around from one college to another. It really shows how bad the college transfer problem is with high D1 programs. We often only pay attention to the top 5 or so players on a college team but often kids in that 6-12 man rotation decide to transfer due to lack of playing time or because they are not a featured player. It is just something to think as we have many new future players headed off to college.

  2. Lawson should probably have stayed closer to home. The Big-10 plays a different brand of basketball than his game, but he will be a great addition to that program. Hear he was very close to his parents and may have been an important factor in his move.

  3. Lawson transfers again? That kid has been transferreing all of his life. I guess his dad is now the cleaning up the gym at APP.
