The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2012 University Division All-State Women’s Soccer Teams on Wednesday. Twenty-one players representing 10 different North Carolina universities were named to the Women’s Soccer All-State teams.
Big South regular-season champion High Point University and UNC Wilmington each placed three players on the first-team. Campbell had two players selected while Charlotte, UNC Asheville and UNC Greensboro each had one player named to the first unit.
UNC Wilmington senior Caitlin Hunter was named the first-team goalkeeper after finishing with a goals-against average of just 0.92 for the Seahawks. Hunter allowed just 21 goals in 22 games while making 126 saves. She set UNC Wilmington single-season records in wins (12), shutouts (7) and save percentage (.857). Hunter was named second-team All-CAA.
Sophomore defender Alise LeCompte of High Point University leads the first-team back line following a sterling sophomore campaign. LeCompte anchored an HPU defense that allowed just a 1.15 goals-against average and posted seven shutouts. She also contributed to the attack with three assists, primarily as a free-kick taker. LeCompte was named second-team All-Big South.
Fellow Big South defender Taylor Brown of Campbell joins LeCompte on the first-team. Brown finished second on the team and first among defenders in the state with five goals on the season. She was second on the Camels in minutes played and was part of a Campbell defense that posted four shutouts on the season. Brown was named first-team All-Big South.
UNC Greensboro senior Cat Barnekow is the third and final defender named to the first-team. Barnekow finished with 13 points on four goals and five assists while playing out of the back. The defender helped lead UNC Greensboro to a regular-season Southern Conference title as part of a defense that posted five-straight shutouts in SoCon play and allowed just four goals in its final 10 games. Barnekow was named first-team All-Southern Conference.
Charlotte’s Amanda Jones was named to the first-team in the midfield after finishing her sophomore campaign with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. Jones led all 49er players in goals, points, shots and shots on goal and tied for the team lead in assists. She posted at least one shot in all but one game during the season and scored both goals for Charlotte in a conference win over VCU. Jones was named second-team All-Atlantic 10.
Junior Taylor Parker and of High Point earned first-team honors in her first season with the Panthers. Parker finished the season with 16 points on four goals and eight assists. She tied for the team-lead in assists and was third in points. The junior scored the game-winning goal for HPU in the final minutes of overtime against Gardner-Webb. Parker was named first-team All-Big South.
Fellow High Point midfielder Becca Hemby joins Parker on the first-team after leading the Panthers with 11 goals and 26 points. Hemby tied the HPU Div. I single-season record for goals scored and scored three game winners. She finished the season second in the Big South in goals scored and tied for third in the conference in total points. Hemby was named first-team All-Big South and was also a second-team Capital One Academic All-American.
Senior Kim Currie is the second member of the first-team from UNC Wilmington and the final midfielder. Currie started all 22 games and tied the UNCW single-season record for games played and game started. She finished 2012 tied for third on the team in scoring with 13 points on four goals and five assists, tying for second on the squad in assists. Currie was named second-team All-CAA.
Senior forward Stephanie Rose is the third and final player from UNC Wilmington to be named to the first-team. Rose led the CAA with 14 goals and 40 points while also finishing second in the conference with 12 assists. The senior ranked 13th in the nation in assists, 15th in points and 32nd in goals. Rose was named first-team All-CAA and first-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region by the NSCAA. She was also a firat-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region Scholar.
UNC Asheville sophomore forward Kaitlyn Eckert joins Rose at the forward position after a season in which she finished with 31 points on 11 goals and nine assists. Eckert led the Bulldogs in goals, assists and points and her 11 goals were the most scored by an Asheville player in seven seasons. The sophomore recorded at least one point in nine-straight games to end the season. Eckert was named second-team All-Big South.
Sophomore Ashley Clark of Campbell is the final member of the first-team and the second member from Campbell. Clark led the Camels with 10 goals and 23 points on the season. She finished fifth in the conference in both goals scored and points. Clark was named first-team All-Big South.
The NCCSIA All-State second team is comprised of East Carolina’s Christiane Cordero and Hali Oughton, Elon’s Shannon Foley, High Point’s Sammy Vercellino and Jacky Kessler, UNC Greensboro’s Karin Sendel, UNC Wilmington’s Stephanie Bronson, Western Carolina’s Laura Greb and Markie-Lynn Studnicky and Appalachian State’s Julia Holz.
Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
