NCCSIA Announces 2012 North Carolina College Division All-State Volleyball Team

The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced its selections for the 2012 College Division All-State Volleyball Teams on Thursday. Fourteen student-athletes representing seven different North Carolina Universities and Colleges comprise the 2012 NCCSIA College Division All-State Teams.

NCAA Division II Southeast Regional champion Wingate University placed three student-athletes on the first-team. Catawba College had two selections while CIAA champion Fayetteville State University and Chowan University each had one player selected to the first-team.

Leading the way on the first-team at the outside hitter position was Wingate freshman Shelly Stumpff. The SAC and Region Freshman of the Year earned all-conference and All-Region honors in her first year at Wingate, leading the Bulldogs with 3.17 kills per set. Catawba senior Kaitlyn Whitmer joined Stumpff on the first-team at outside hitter. The first-team All-SAC and All-Region selection led the conference and ranked 10th nationally with 4.37 kills per set, adding 2.91 digs per set for the Indians.

Wingate sophomore Lexi Potter was the leading vote getter at the middle blocker position. The first-team All-SAC and All-Region honoree led the conference with a .322 hitting percentage, ranked second with 1.05 blocks per set and registered 2.05 kills per set. Fayetteville State Senior Ifeyinwa Nwokolo also earned first-team All-State accolades. The CIAA Player of the Year averaged 3.16 kills per set while hitting .385, leading the Broncos to the CIAA title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Nwokolo ranked 10th nationally in hitting percentage.

SAC Player of the Year Anna Hilton of Wingate earned first-team All-State honors at the right-side hitter position. The All-SAC and All-Region selection earned third team All-American honors from the AVCA. Hilton averaged 3.03 kills and 3.33 digs per set, ranking second in the SAC with a .313 hitting percentage, leading Wingate to its seventh straight SAC title and second regional championship in three years.

Chowan senior Callie Armistead earned first-team honors at the setter position. The senior has handed out over 4,000 assists in her career, leading the Hawks to two conference titles and four division titles. Armistead has earned All-CIAA honors all four years of her career, earning first-team accolades three times.

Catawba senior Jenny Young was named the first-team All-State libero. The second team All-SAC selection finished third nationally with 6.74 digs per set. Young holds the Catawba record for digs in a match (55), digs in a season (769) and career digs (2,290).

The NCCSIA All-State second team is comprised of Fayetteville State’s Joi Emanuel and JaMisha Jordan, Lenoir-Rhyne’s Haley Rhyne, Greensboro College’s Liz Widenhouse, Chowan’s Karina Monroe, Queens University of Charlotte’s Anna Gibbs and Wingate’s Alison Cooke.

Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.

Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, softball and baseball.
