College Basketball News – Guilford’s Josh Pittman Named to All-State Team

GUILFORD’S PITTMAN EARNS ALL-STATE BASKETBALL HONOR

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College’s Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) earned a spot on the 2013 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division Men’s Basketball Team, the organization announced Friday. Pittman, who also earned all-state recognition in 2011, was a second-team selection.

The all-star units are comprised of basketball student-athletes from North Carolina’s NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA institutions. The state’s sports information directors nominated student-athletes for the teams, which were selected by NCCSIA members. NCCSIA was founded in 2002 and its first all-state basketball teams were released in 2005.

Pittman, a 6-1, 160-pound senior guard, joined Ben Strong ‘08 as the Quakers’ only three-time First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball players. He started in all but one of the Quakers’ 27 games this season, missing one contest due to the flu. Pittman led Guilford and was second in the ODAC in scoring with 17.3 points per game. He also paced the league in assists per game (5.0), and averaged 4.4 rebounds per game, both career highs. Pittman posted career highs in three-pointers made (80) and three-point percentage (.388). His 3.1 three-pointers per game stood second in the league and 14th in NCAA Division III. He captured Guilford’s free-throw percentage award with a .835 figure that ranked second in the league and 64th nationally.

Pittman led Guilford’s scorers 16 times this season and had 10 20-point games. He scored in double figures 22 times, including a season-high 32-point game at Emory & Henry College. Pittman also earned the ODAC’s Player of the Week Jan. 14.

Pittman leaves Guilford ranked prominently among the school’s career leaders. He stands second in school history in three-point field goals made (253) and attempted (674) and is third in minutes played (3132) and career steals (146). Pittman ranks among the career leaders in 22 different categories, including free-throw percentage (5th, .821), assists (6th, 312), three-point percentage (8th, .375), points (15th, 1497) and defensive rebounds (10th, 335). Guilford compiled an 82-30 record in Pittman’s four years, captured the 2010 ODAC Tournament title and reached the 2010 Division III Tournament semifinals with a 30-3 record.

Pittman helped coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers to a 19-8 overall record, 10-6 in the ODAC. Palombo will return as many as 10 letter winners to Guilford next season.
