East Football

Randy Raper
East head coach is entering his first year at Northern Nash High…served as the head football coach at Hunt HS fro 22 seasons, compiling a record of 203-72 and winning 11 conference titles and making 20 state playoff appearances…served as an assistant coach for the East in the 2002 East-West All-Star game…also served for 10 years as the wrestling coach, winning 6 conference titles, 4 years as the tennis coach, winning 4 conference titles, 1 year as the baseball coach, and 3 years as the softball coach…previous to being the head football coach, he served as an assistant for 9 seasons…native of Wilson, NC…1975 graduate of Fike High where he competed in track and field and in football where he was twice named All-Area and All-Conference and was named team MVP and Best All-Around and was the Golden Helmet Award recipient…attended Chowan College…1980 graduate of Elon College…says “It’s a great honor just to be a coach, but to get the opportunity to coach an All-Star team with other great coaches is an honor to really be proud of, and it will be something you will never forget! This will be one of many highlights in my career as a coach and a person. Thanks, for this opportunity, and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Ken Avent
East assistant coach is entering his 8th season as the head coach of Kenan High where his teams have gone 77-20 in the last 7 seasons…also coached at North Duplin High and North Johnston High…has compiled a career record of 128-45 in 13 seasons and his teams have won 6 conference titles and made 13 state playoff appearances, including winning the 2007 state championship…named AP Coach of the Year in 2007…born in Faison, NC…1989 graduate of North Duplin High where he played football, baseball, and basketball, winning a state basketball championship in 1989…1984 graduate of Catawba College…says “It is an honor to coach in the East-West game. I have been fortunate to work with some great assistants and have the opportunity to coach some great athletes.”

Jeff Gould
East assistant coach is entering his 9th season as an assistant coach at Southwest Edgecombe High where his teams have gone 71-27 in 8 seasons…previous to his time at Southwest Edgecombe, he also served as an assistant coach at Tarboro High…during his career, his teams have gone 192-72 in 21 seasons and won 14 conference titles and made 21 state playoff appearances…also serves as the head softball coach…born in Jacksonville, NC…1980 graduate of D.H. Conley High where he competed in track and field and where he was the Team Leader Award recipient in football…1985 graduate of East Carolina University…earned Masters of Art in Education, School Administration plus Supervision Certification from ECU in 1994…says “Coaching in the East-West All-Star game is a tremendous honor. Being selected to coach in the All-Star game is more of a reflection upon the great head coaches and athletes I have had the honor to work with than my own personal achievement. I have had the privilege to be an assistant to many great head high school football coaches: Tarboro High – Jim Brett, Russell Weinstein, Mike Schott, Jeff Craddock, and currently with Southwest Edgecombe High School’s Raymond Cobb. Most importantly, I have been married to Pamela Killebrew Gould for 25 years without whose understanding and support my football coaching career would not have been possible. Additionally, I have two daughters, Dawson and Sydney, who are both great girls that are also three sport high school athletes.”

Tyrone Johnson
East assistant coach is entering his 18th season as the head football coach at Beddingfield High where his teams have gone 90-103 in 17 seasons, won 3 conference titles, and made 14 state playoff appearances…named Region 3 Coach of the Year and 3-times named Conference Coach of the Year…native of Vicksburg, MS…1981 graduate of Vicksburg High where he competed in football, track and field, and baseball…attended Hinds Jr. College in Raymond, MS, playing in an All-Star football game in 1982…1985 graduate of East Carolina University where he played football and was named Defensive MVP and led the team in tackles…earned his M.A. from East Carolina University in 1987…he and wife Kimberly have four kids: Tyrone, Jr., Wesley, Micah, and Brittany…says “I’m am excited to be coaching in this game. It is a great opportunity, and I am looking forward to it.”

David Lovette
East assistant coach is entering his 8th season at Gray’s Creek High where his teams have gone 56-30 in 7 seasons…coached previously at St. Pauls High and Red Springs High…has compiled a career record of 94-61-1 in 13 seasons and his teams have won 5 conference titles and made 10 state playoff appearances…5 times named Conference Coach of the Year…named Robeson County Coach of the Year in 2004…during his career he has also served as golf coach and assistant coach in baseball, basketball, and football…born in Lumberton, NC…1986 graduate of Red Springs High where he played for Coach Clyde Parrish…1991 graduate of UNC Pembroke…married to wife Kim for 17 years…they have 3 sons: Ty, 15; Ben, 11; and Will, 7…says “I feel that it is a great honor to be selected as a coach in the East-West All-Star game.”

Chris Martin
East assistant coach is entering his 10th season at Broughton High where he has compiled a career record of 51-55 in 9 seasons and where his teams have won 1 conference title and made 7 state playoff appearances…previously served as an assistant coach at Anson County High and Kinston High…born in San Mateo, CA…1982 graduate of Tampa Jesuit (FL) where he completed in football and baseball and placed in state in wrestling…1984 graduate of Chowan Jr. College…1986 graduate of Elon College.

West Football

Shane Laws
West head coach is entering his 7th season as head coach at A.C. Reynolds High where he has compiled a career record of 62-17 in 6 seasons and where his teams won 5 conference titles and made 6 state playoff appearances, including winning the 2009 state championship…named NW4A Coach of the Year in 2008, WNC Coach of the Year in 2009, and MAC Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2012…previously served as an assistant football coach at East Wilkes High and as an assistant football and baseball coach at A.C. Reynolds High…born in Mooresville, NC…1991 graduate of Newton Conover High where he played baseball and was named All-Conference in football and basketball…1996 graduate of Appalachian State University… says “I am honored to have been selected to coach in this legendary game. As a lifelong NC resident, I understand and appreciate the history of this game. I want to thank all of my assistant coaches and former players at A.C. Reynolds for helping provide me with this extraordinary coaching opportunity. I also want to thank all the coaches I have gotten to work with this week; you are all great guys and fantastic football coaches. Last but certainly not least, I want to thank my beautiful wife and daughters.”

Dale Barnes
West assistant coach has assumed the position of Athletic Director after completing his 7th season as head football coach at West Davidson High where he compiled a career record of 41-41 and his teams won 2 conference titles and made 7 state playoff appearances…served as head baseball coach from 1994-2006, compiling a record of 118-184 and where his teams won 2 conference tournament titles and he was named Conference Coach of the Year…coached baseball in the NC State Games from 1996-2000…also served as head wrestling coach from 1990-1994 where his teams won 2 conference titles and he was named Conference Coach of the Year…born in Taylorsville, NC…1984 graduate of South Caldwell High where he played football and basketball…1989 graduate of Appalachian State University…says “Thank you to all the young men who have played for me and afforded me the opportunity and privilege of coaching in this event.”

Butch Carter
West assistant coach is entering his 13th season as head coach at South Caldwell High where he has compiled a career record of 79-66 in 12 seasons and where his teams have won 2 conference titles and made 8 state playoff appearances…3-times named Unifour Coach of the Year and Conference Coach of the Year…born in Hickory, NC…1989 graduate of South Caldwell High where he was named All-County 3 times and All-Conference twice in football…earned an Associates Degree from Lees McRae College, where he lettered in football and track, in 1993… 2007 graduate of U.S. Sports Academy.

Michael Johns
West assistant coach is entering his 15th season as head coach at Mt. Pleasant High where he has compiled a career record of 81-91 in 14 seasons and where his teams have won 1 conference title and made 10 state playoff appearances…named NCPreps Coach of the Year in 2007…twice named Conference Coach of the Year…also coaches track and Field where he was named Conference Coach of the Year in 2000…previously served as track coach and assistant football coach at West Stanly High and East Rowan High…born in Akron, OH…1984 graduate of Coronado High in El Paso, TX where he was named All-Conference in football…1988 graduate of Trinity University (TX) where he played football…earned Masters of Business Education from UNC Greensboro in 2005…says “It is an honor to represent the West in the all-star game. I look forward to developing many new relationships.”

Scott Johnson
West assistant coach is entering his 9th season as head coach at Starmount High where he has compiled a career record of 66-33 and his teams have won 4 conference titles and made 7 state playoff appearances in 8 seasons …4-times named Conference Coach of the Year…native of Sparta, NC…1985 graduate of Alleghany High where played football, basketball, and baseball…1989 graduate of Appalachian State University…earned National Board Certification in 2002…says “I am extremely proud to represent our current and former players and coaches. This honor is a reflection of the hard work of an entire community to impact young men’s lives for the better. I thank God for placing me in this role and give Him the honor and glory.”

Terry Radford
West assistant coach took over as Athletic Director and head baseball coach at Stuart Cramer High in January 2013. Prior to the move to the new school, he served as Athletic Director, assistant football coach, and head baseball coach at Hunter Huss High where the baseball field was named after him in 2010…previously served as an assistant baseball coach and head wrestling coach at Huss and as head baseball coach and assistant football coach at North Gaston High…native of Gastonia, NC…1978 graduate of Hunter Huss High where played football, baseball, and won a state basketball championship…1982 graduate of Catawba Collage…says “I would like to thank the staff of the NCCA for the honor of participating as a coach in the East-West All-Star football game.”
