GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) was one of 232 male track and field student-athletes in NCAA Division III named All-Academic by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) Wednesday. The announcement marks another prestigious academic honor for Cason, who last month was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 5 NCAA Division III Track & Field/Cross Country Team.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and meet either of the following athletic standards: compete in an NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championship or finish the regular season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event, or ranked in the national top 25 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.

Cason set the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and narrowly missed a spot in the NCAA Division III Championships last spring. His time of nine minutes, 15.34 seconds at the Duke Twilight May 5 broke the former league standard set in 2012 and ranked 33rd nationally. Cason earned Second Team All-ODAC recognition in the steeplechase for placing second to teammate Chad Norton at the 2013 ODAC Outdoor Championships. Cason was a third-team all-league honoree by virtue of his third-place effort in the 3,000 at the 2013 ODAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

A double major in biology and health sciences with a minor in chemistry, Cason received Division III Cross Country All-Academic recognition from the USTFCCCA in the fall. He also earned one of Guilford’s prestigious Charles A. Dana Scholarships, the Eugene Hire Memorial Award for academic excellence and was inducted into the school’s Scholarship Society. Guilford’s Alumni Association honored him with its 2013 Clyde A. Milner Academic Excellence Award and he collected Guilford’s Eva Campbell Biology Scholarship in 2012 and 2013. He is a six-time member of Guilford’s Student-Athlete Honor Roll. The dean’s list student has twice earned Academic All-ODAC recognition and has served as a resident advisor. He is completing an internship this summer in Duke University’s Department of Radiation Oncology.

Coach Danny Cash’s track and field teams placed fifth at the 2013 ODAC Outdoor Championships and sixth at the indoor championships this season. Cash expects Cason and 15 other letter winners back for the 2013-14 track campaign.
