Thoughts on Kevin Callahan(Southeast Guilford HS) coming from today’s N&R

The word from today’s News and Record on-line is “stunned”…The word coming in from the Southeast Guilford community, on the death of baseball coach Kevin Callahan, who passed away late Saturday night/early Sunday morning and this has hit the Southeast Guilford community hard…Kevin Callahan gone way to early at age 56 and leaving behind a family and many friends and here is what is being said by many among the SEG Falcon coaching staff:

“There were several occasions where he reminded the players, ‘This doesn’t last forever. Make the best of it,’ ” Southeast head coach Dave Beasley said.

The SEG Falcons made it to the State 4-A Baseball finals in 2001 and fell to Lee County two-games-to-one….

“That was an exciting time; we were winning a lot of ballgames and we had some great kids,” said Mark White, who served as an assistant coach for Callahan in 2000-01 and is the school’s athletics trainer. “If we had been a little more fortunate, we probably would have beaten them in two games. … but it was a great run.”

On Callahan’s death:

“It was pretty much a shock to everybody, all Southeast people, coaches, players, Southeast faculty especially,” White said. “It’s very, very shocking and very, very sad.”

“I thought very highly of him as a person and certainly as a parent,” Beasley said. “… It makes the point to all of us to get our priorities right and know what our mortality is.”

  1. Kevin was a classy, fierce competiror as a player and a coach. I watched him grow up playing in Greensboro and later and always found him to be a model of coaching excellence. He did not let hip-replacement surgery slow him down insofar as his duties on and off the field were concerned. The only thing I remember ever taking him away from his summer (COLT league) coaching duties was a desire to spend more time around his son to impart to the next generation of Calahans some of what he and his brother David had learned. We will be tjhe better for ahving known him and the lessor for his loss. Thanks for a good ride Kevin.
