Shane Carew Joins Elon Men¹s Soccer Staff

ELON, N.C. – Elon head men’s soccer coach Darren Powell announced the addition of Shane Carew as an assistant coach to his staff on Tuesday, August 6, for the 2013 season. Carew arrives after a serving as the Executive Director of Coaching for FC Carolina Alliance.

“We are excited to have Shane join our coaching staff,” said Powell. “Shane brings a wealth of coaching experiences that will enthuse and motivate our players. He has been around the excellent UNC Charlotte program from being a player to a part of their coaching staff and has observed their recent success. At the same time, he has grown the FCCA club as the executive director to one of the most respected clubs in North Carolina.

“We look forward to having Shane continue to help grow the Elon soccer program both in the classroom and on the field.”

As the FCCA Executive Director, Carew oversaw all FCCA Soccer Programs including FCCA Tournaments, Classic, Challenge, Academy Munchkin, Pre-Academy, Goalkeeping and SAT. He holds soccer coaching licenses in the both UEFA “B” and USSF “A”.

From 2001 to 2003, Carew played collegiately at Charlotte where he was a three-time All-Conference selection and received National Team of the Week honors for the 49ers. Carew also played professionally in his native Ireland with Shelbourne FC and Kilkenny City and also with the Long Island Rough Riders. During his time at Charlotte, Carew was selected to the Irish National Team to play in the 2003 World University Games in South Korea.

In addition, Carew served as the director of soccer operations at his alma matter and on the North Carolina Olympic Development Program (ODP) staff. He was also the director of the Boy’s Classic program at FCCA and is a former president of the Charlotte Area Youth Soccer League (CAYSL).

“I am very excited to join the coaching staff at Elon University,” said Carew. “The program has had incredible success on and off the field and I am looking forward to working with Darren, his staff and players. I have been a huge admirer of Coach Powell’s ability to produce teams to compete at the highest level in the collegiate game, produce teams with incredible academic standards and building a reputation for sending players to the MLS.”

Carew graduated from Charlotte in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in English and communication Studies.

Carew takes over for former lead assistant Chris Little, who left Elon last month to become the Academy Director for the NC Fusion & Head Coach of the Carolina Dynamo PDL team.

“On behalf of myself, the staff and the players we would like to thank Coach Little for his tremendous contributions over the past three years,” said Powell. “Chris is one of the top coaches around and we all wish him much success with his new project with the NC Fusion and the Carolina Dynamo.”
