Greg Flesher Announces 2013-14 HPU Men’s Golf Schedule

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University men’s golf head coach Greg Flesher announced the team’s 2013-14 schedule on Wednesday. The Panthers will play in eight brand new tournaments this season, returning to just two of last year’s competitions.

“We have a vastly different schedule this season,” Flesher said. “We added new venues, tougher competition and courses with higher ratings. I felt it was very important to put this young team against the best possible competition. The challenges they will face throughout the season will benefit them in the long run.”

HPU will open the fall at the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. This is the first time HPU will play in the tournament held at the Guyan Golf and Country Club on Sept. 9-10.

On Sept. 23 the Panthers will host the Myrtle Beach Fall Invitational at Myrtle Beach National in Myrtle Beach, S.C. High Point will head to the site of the Big South Tournament, the Patriot in Ninety Six, S.C., for a tri-match with league rivals Radford and Gardner-Webb on Oct. 5. The women’s golf team’s from all three programs will also take part.

High Point will compete in the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Oct. 14-15. The tournament is hosted by Appalachian State at Mimosa Hills and is the only repeat tournament for HPU in the fall. Last year HPU finished fourth out of 17 teams in the field.

The Panthers will wrap up the fall at near-bye Grandover Resort on Oct. 26 as part of he Bridgestone Golf Collegiate hosted by UNC Greensboro.

The spring seasons opens on Feb. 16 at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. HPU will also compete in the Davidson College Invitational (March 3-4) and Mission Inn Spring Spectacular (March 15-16). High Point will close out March at the Keith Hills Spring Intercollegiate hosted by Campbell on March 31.

The Panthers will head back to the Coca-Cola Wofford Invitational on April 14 as a final tune-up before the Big South Tournament. The Panthers will go after a league title on April 21 at the Patriot in Ninety Six, S.C.

The Panthers return just two players from last season, sophomore McKay Tye and junior LJ Georgetti. HPU’s newcomers include Colorado transfer Tyler Engel, Maryland High School champion David Long, Treyborn champion Jack Sides and Charlotte Observer Golfer of the Year Philip Oweida.
