15 minutes at 15 schools in 15 days:Day Nine with Southwest Guilford preseason footballl

LA Logan, on the road for GreensboroSports.com, at Southwest Guilford High School….

Coach Eric Rainey and his team looks to avoid another one game win season. They have 98 players signed up to play, but only had 75 players between varsity and junior varsity suited up at practice on Monday Aug 12.

The Cowboys will play play in a Jamboree at Grimsley Wed Aug. 14 and at the Rockingham County New Bridge Bank Jamboree at Rockingham County this upcoming Friday.

SWG opens up their season at Rockingham County on Aug 23. Coach Rainey had this to say: “We match-up real well. We’re looking to put a good product on the field. We’re just looking to come out and execute. My whole thing for us is to be fundamentally sound. Block, tackle and mistake free. We have a lot of athletes on offense and we have some physical kids on defense. (As far as their offense) We’re looking to be balanced. Traditionally, people don’t expect SW to throw the ball because in the past you look at film and we haven’t been able to throw it successfully. My goal is to be balanced.”

SW will return 12 senoir players.

Top Returners: SS/WR senior Justin Hensley and FS/RB senior transfer from HPCA Rick Mack (trans both are expected to be very good on both sides of the ball. As the coach mentioned they both have very high football IQs and not afraid to play downhill and smack someone in the mouth. Mack a 4.4 guy will receive a lot of carries for this ball club, while Hensley will be the playermaker outside at WR.

Also on the defense side of the ball LB/FB Christian Shipman will lead the LBs crew and NG Sammy Hunter will lead the defensive line attack. DE Ambrose Jackson is coming off injury and stands at 6’5 250. Rainey commented that “teams will have to decide to run at him or around him.”

Junior Eric Cunningham has earned the starting QB spot. As a dual threat he hopes to keep a balanced attack for SW. Coach Rainey said “he has a overall better knowledge of the offense. He’s throwing the ball really well. He goes through his progressions, picks up the hot reads and blitzs.”

Also on the offensive side of the ball Coach Rainey is excited about last year’s #1 400 meter freshman Jeremiah Brown at WR. He’s a 6’2 guy that can stretch the field and go up and get jump balls.

Coach Rainey believes the team(s) to beat in coference is East Forsyth along with High Point Central. He also mentioned that the Andrews game is always a big game. Since they haven’t beaten a High Point team in recent years, Rainey hopes that he can break that cycle this year.

Once school starts back they will practice from 4:45-6:30 Mon.-Thurs.

Ending quote from Rainey: ” I want to win every game and that’s what we’re preparing for. We have the talent to be at minimum .500, but goal is 1.000.
