HPU Men’s Soccer Earns 2-0 Exhibition Win at Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. – The High Point University men’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Appalachian State in exhibition action on Saturday night in Boone, N.C. Sophomore Austin Yearwood and freshman Chris Ramsell each found the back for the Panthers.

“We challenged our group to go on the road and figure out how to leave with a positive result tonight,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “For us to go into a hostile road environment against a good Appalachian State and pick up the win is very encouraging. At this point we are really pleased with where our defense is at and we are challenging our offense to match that level of performance.”

Yearwood ended the scoreless draw in the 62nd minute with a goal off a set piece. The Panthers earned the free kick when sophomore Ben Burdon drew a foul at the edge of the penalty area. Yearwood lined up over the ball and hit an in-swinging shot to the far post from 18-yards out to put HPU ahead.

Ramsell doubled the High Point lead in the 88th minute with a goal from distance to seal the win. The freshman midfielder received a pass from freshman Matt Gweh and let loose a shot from 35-yards out to beat the Mountaineer keeper.

High Point finished the game with a 9-8 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman Ryan Massey started in goal for HPU and made four saves on the way to a clean sheet.

The Panthers officially kick off the 2013 season next weekend at the VCU Rams Classic in Richmond, Va. High Point will play Old Dominion on Aug. 30 at 4:30 p.m., and then face UAB on Sept. 1 at 4:30 p.m.
