Once a Camel not always a Camel:Luke Sonricker(Ragsdale HS) will face his old team on Saturday when the Charlotte 49ers play their first-ever game

Saturday will be special in more ways than one for Luke Sonricker(Ragsdale High School).

from www.charlotteobserver.com:

A little more than two years ago, Sonricker was coming off a solid spring football practice at Campbell, where he had risen to second on the depth chart and was named the Camels’ most improved receiver.

But things change. Sonricker is now a junior receiver for the Charlotte 49ers, who will face his old team – Campbell – on Saturday in the 49ers’ inaugural game at Richardson Stadium.

“I’ve got a lot of friends who still play for Campbell,” Sonricker said. “So we talk a little smack and have some fun with it.”

Sonricker went to the Camels’ non-scholarship program in 2010 from Jamestown’s Ragsdale High. He redshirted that season, then went into spring practice, where he impressed coaches and capped things off with a strong performance in the Camels’ spring game.

But Campbell, said Sonricker, wasn’t for him. He heard about the 49ers’ startup program and enrolled at Charlotte in 2011. Uninvited and unannounced, he attended a walk-on tryout in April 2012.

“I just kind of showed up,” said Sonricker.
