College Volleyball Results- Guilford Goes 1-1 On Day Two of Averett Classic

DANVILLE, Va. – Guilford College’s volleyball team split two matches Sunday on the final day of the Averett University Cougar Classic. The Quakers picked up their first win of the season with a 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-14 win over Hollins University, but fell to Greensboro College, 25-15, 25-21, 29-27.

Guilford (1-3) notched its first win of the young season with a 3-1 win over Hollins. Brittany DeCesare accounted for a game-high 19 points thanks to 14 kills and five service aces. She also added 11 digs for a double-doubles. Brittany Freeman put away a match-best 16 kills on .400 hitting and Taylor Whitley set up 45 assists in the win. Whitley also had four of the Quakers’ 14 aces in the match. Senior Meredith Foscue (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) had 22 digs and Malikah French added 10 kills.

Haley Ortiz led Hollins (1-2) with 17 kills on .452 hitting. Lauren Hays added 13 putaways.

Liz Widenhouse had a match-high 15 kills and served up five aces in Greensboro’s win. The Pride (1-2) had 12 aces on the day, four by setter Cortland Phillips, who also had 27 assists and seven digs.

Freeman led Guilford with eight kills and three blocks. French added seven putaways and hit .455 with four blocks.

Foscue represented Guilford on the Classic’s all-tournament team. She totaled 57 digs on the weekend and averaged 4.07 pickups per set.

Coach Emily Gann’s club returns to action next weekend in the Greensboro College Invitational. Guilford opens the two-day tournament Saturday (9/7) at 10:00 a.m. versus the host Pride.
