College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 3, Averett 3 (2 OT)

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett University’s Nathan Brown scored in the 72nd minute to force the game’s third and final tie in the Cougars’ 3-3 nonconference soccer draw with Guilford College Tuesday.

Brown’s first goal of the season came after he dodged a Quakers’ defender and banged the ball past Guilford goalie Marko Mandalinic from the top of the box. The teams combined for just one shot on goal in the final 17 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime.

The Cougars (0-1-1) twice battled back from one-goal deficits within a 15-minute stretch of the second half. Guilford’s Jake Elsey tallied off a Michael Robles assist early in the second half to break a 1-1 tie, but Averett’s Adil Iich answered six minutes later off a feed from Benjy Slator. The Quakers’ Colin Dillon converted a penalty kick in the 68th minute, which gave Guilford its final lead of the game.

Averett outshot Guilford, 24-13, but the Quakers’ Marko Mandalinic made nine saves. Michael Decker had one stop for the Cougars. Guilford had nine corner kicks to Averett’s five.

Guilford opens its home schedule Friday (9/5) against visiting Oglethorpe University at 7:00 p.m.
