College Men’s Soccer Final – Guilford 2, Oglethorpe 1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Michael MacVane made seven saves in Guilford College’s 2-1 soccer win over visiting Oglethorpe University Friday in the Quakers’ home opener.

Abdul Faal and Jonny Goffredi both scored their first goals as Quakers to help Guilford (1-1-1) earn its first win of the season. Both goals were blasted from long range, including Goffredi’s game-winner, which was unassisted from about 20 yards out.

Oglethorpe (0-2) was strong at the game’s start and finish, which helped the Stormy Petrels enjoy an 18-6 edge in shots. Austin Graham halved his team’s deficit off a cross from Nick Williamson in the 78th minute. Oglethorpe kept up the pressure and nearly tied the game on a header from close range by Nik Papanikolopoulos, which MacVane caught in his stomach.

MacVane had six of his saves in the first half, during which time Faal scored the lone goal. Shortly after entering the game, Faal took a pass from former Cape Fear Community College teammate Rob Sandidge and blasted the ball just under the crossbar and through Oglethorpe goalie Vaughn Moore’s reach.
