HPU Women’s Soccer Falls At Elon, 5-0

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team fell on the road to Elon University by a score of 5-0 on Sunday night in Burlington, N.C. The Panthers drop to 0-4-0 in 2013 with the loss.

“This was an embarrassing loss here tonight,” head coach Marty Beall said. “It did not help that Elon is coming off a game against a Div. III team while we played a difficult UNC Greensboro team on Friday night. I don’t want to take anything away from Elon though, they were better at every position throughout the game. Our individual selfishness was exposed over 90 minutes tonight. We must learn to come together and play within our system if we want to have a successful season.”

Elon took an early 1-0 goal in the second minute of action with a header by Jennifer McGorty. Nicole Dennion created space of the left flank and hit a cross to the far post where McGroty flicked it into the net for the score.

McGorty picked up a second goal in the 14th minute, scoring off a free kick. Olivia Mackey took the free kick and delivered the ball to the left post where McGorty flashed across and pushed it just over the line before HPU defender Alise LeCompte could clear it away.

Elon continued to extend its lead in the 35th minute with a header goal by Alissa Pantuosco off a corner. Rychel Diver delivered the corner kick from the right side to the near post where Pantuosco found space to head it home.

The Phoenix picked up goals from Dennion and Catherine Brinkman in the second half to make the final score 5-0 on the night.

High Point next travels to Annapolis, Md., on Friday, Sept. 15, to take on the Midshipmen of Navy. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
