Elon Women’s Soccer Rolls to 5-0 Win Over High Point

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 5-0 rout of local rival High Point on Sunday night, Sept. 8, at Rudd Field. Elon remains unbeaten at 3-0-1 with the victory, while High Point drops to 0-4 with the setback.

“High Point is a well-coached team that has had some key injuries at this point, but they’re a very good team,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal. “Tonight was the most complete performance we’ve had in many years. It was a real special night for us.”

Jennifer McGorty headed in a Nicole Dennion cross in the second minute of the match to give the Phoenix early momentum. In the 14th minute, McGorty knocked in her second goal off a great cross from Olivia Mackey to give Elon a 2-0 edge.

Elon took a 3-0 lead at intermission following an Alissa Pantuosco goal off a Raychel Diver corner.

Dennion scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Phoenix up 4-0 in the 57th minute after taking a High Point defender 1-on-1 for a goal from 10 yards out.

Catherine Brinkman gave Elon a 5-0 lead in the 69th minute following her strike off a Pantuosco through ball up the middle of the field.

Kate Murphy played 75 minutes between the posts to help the Phoenix earn its third shutout of the season.

Elon returns to action on Friday at 5 p.m. in Wilmington, N.C., versus Longwood as part of a weekend tournament at UNC Wilmington.
