SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team set a new program record with a combined score of 294 in the first round of the Terrier Intercollegiate on Monday in Spartanburg, S.C. The Panthers are in first place out of seven teams after the first day of competition.

“Overall this was an outstanding start to the season,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Casey played really well around the greens and I couldn’t ask for anything more from Sarah and Danielle in their first time out. Now we need to go out and play tomorrow as its own separate tournament and try to win that one as well.”

Sophomore Casey Ward turned in a career-low round of 71 to lead all HPU scorers on the day. Ward sits in first in the individual standings at one-under par. The sophomore’s previous low round was a 76 in the first round of the HPU Classic. Ward’s 71 is tied for the sixth-lowest round in HPU program history.

Freshman Sarah Bae finished one-stroke behind Ward with an even-par 72 in her first collegiate round placing her in second after one round of play. Fellow freshman Danielle Fuss carded a 74 and sits in fifth after the first day.

Junior Grier Bennett turned in a score of 77 in the first round and finished the day in a tie for eighth. Sophomore Tan Cheeranont rounded out the HPU starting five in a tie for 19th with an opening round 80.

Ward holds a one-stroke lead over Bae and a two-stroke lead over Wofford’s Katy Funk and SCAD-Savannah’s Alazine Urizer in the individual standings heading into the second and final round on Tuesday.

High Point’s previous low round came during the 2005-06 season when the Panthers shot a combined 296 in the second round of the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate. Monday’s score is just the third sub-300 round turned in by HPU in program history.

The Panthers return to the Spartanburg Country Club for the second and final round of the Terrier Intercollegiate on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. High Point will play alongside Wofford and Appalachian State.
