HPU Men’s Golf 10th At Marshall Invitational

The High Point University men’s golf team sits in 10th place after two rounds of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W.Va. Sophomore McKay Tye sits in a tie for sixth place with a three-under 139.

“McKay was great today,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “He played two nearly flawless rounds and showed a lot of maturity on the course. Jack Sides recovered from a rocky first round with a fantastic afternoon round. Those two had a lot of bright spots on the course.

“The other three had a tough day but all made mistakes that are very fixable. I am anxious to see them respond tomorrow and make adjustments. This is a beautiful course with a ton of talented competition which is a great way to start the season.”

Tye shot a 69 in the opening round on Monday morning, just his second collegiate round under 70. His career-low is a 65 from the 2012 Bash at the Beach. He followed it with a 70 in the second round on Monday for a total score of 139 after 36 holes. He is in a three-way tie for sixth place with Marshall’s Brian Anania and Xavier’s Korey Ward.

Freshman Jack Sides is tied for 20th after two rounds with a two-over 144. Sides carded a 75 in his first collegiate round but shaved off six strokes in the second round, shooting a 69.

Freshman Phil Oweida carded a 150 (73-77) in his collegiate debut to sit tied for 56th. Freshman David Long shot two rounds of 78 for a total score of 156, good for 80th place after two rounds.

Junior Tyler Engel rounded out the scores for HPU with a 36-hole score of 157 (79-78).

The Panthers posted a team score of 589, 25 strokes behind tournament leader Richmond. William & Mary’s Alex Hicks and Richmond’s Jack Wilkes are tied for the individual lead at seven under.

The Panthers will play 18 holes on Tuesday to conclude the Marshall Invitational.
