HPU Women’s Golf Wins 2013 Terrier Intercollegiate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a 294 for the second-straight day to win the 2013 Terrier Intercollegiate with a total team score of 588 on Tuesday in Spartanburg, S.C. Freshman Sarah Bae finished first in her first collegiate tournament with a score of 143.

“This is the type of performance that I envisioned for this team,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “If one player is struggling the others have their back and any one of our players has the ability to go low in any given round. Grier picked up a lot of birdies today and Sarah has the type of game where if she gets a bogey she is going to come back and get a birdie to wipe that away. Both she and Danielle had great showings in their first collegiate tournaments. I am very pleased with how we are starting the season.”

High Point’s second round score matched its record for lowest team score in a round, tying the mark set one day earlier. The Panthers’ total team score of 588 is a new 36-hole program record. The score is 11-strokes lower than the previous record of 599, which was set at the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate during the 2005-06 season.

“It means a great deal to see how far this team has come in four years. This is the type of performance I foresaw when I recruited these girls. The goal was to find a group that would work together and have similar visions and goals. It is only the first tournament of the season, but it is nice to see it all come together.”

One day after shooting an even-par 72, Bae carded a one-under 71 to claim the individual medal with a total score of 143. The freshman finished one-stroke shy of matching the HPU program record for low score through 36 holes.

Junior Grier Bennett turned in the low round of the day with a two-under 70 and finished in fourth place overall with a two-day total of 147. Bennett tied the High Point record for low round vs. Par and finished one-stroke off the record for the low score in a single round.

Freshman Danielle Fuss carded a 78 in the second round and finished her first collegiate tournament in a tie for 10th with a total score of 152. Day-one leader Casey Ward shot an 82 in the second round and finished in a tie for 12th with a score of 153 while sophomore Tan Cheeranont carded a 75 on Tuesday to finish in 15th with a total score of 155.

High Point finished six-strokes clear of Wofford which came in second with a total team score of 594. SCAD-Savannah moved into third with a score of 607. Appalachian State fell to fourth with a total score of 623 and USC Upstate finished in fifth with a score of 627.

The tournament win by High Point is the first under Flesher and the third in program history.

Bae finished one-stroke ahead of Wofford’s Katy Funk in the individual standings and three-strokes ahead of Alazine Urizar from SCAD-Savannah.

High Point returns to action on Sept. 23 when it co-hosts the Myrtle Beach Invitational. The two-day tournament will be held at Myrtle Beach National.
