Former Dudley Panthers’ football coach and N.C. A&T player/coach and Tampa Bay Buc George Ragsdale now coaching Grambling Tigers

He is the man to call when you want to find someone that has done it all, George Ragsdale……His name is Ragsdale, but he coached at Dudley HS and also played for the N.C. A&T Aggies and later on he played as a runningback in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and coach John McKay and he was on the staff for the N.C. A&T Aggies as an assistant coach, but he could never land the head job….

The head job at A&T now belongs to Rod Broadway, who played at UNC and later was an assistant at Duke and was the head man at Grambling State, coaching the legendary ‘Tigers’, the team that Eddie Robinson made famous and then former Tiger and Washington Redskin quarterback Doug Williams took over for Coach Robinson and then Rod Broadway followed Doug Williams at Grambling…..

Broadway left Grambling for N.C. A&T and Williams came back to take over the Grambling Tigers again, but today he was fired and George Ragsdale was named the interim coach of the Grambling Tigers….Doug Williams was something like (0-12) over the last one-plus seasons at Grambling and the Tigers had to buy out his $250,000 per year contract, to get rid of him…

Now I guess you can say that Grambling is Ragsdale’s Tigers, since George Ragsdale in now the man in charge of the team….

There was quick speculation that the A&T Aggies’ coach Rod Broadway might be looking to go back to Grambling, but he told the N.C. A&T AD ‘NO WAY’ and that he was going to stay and be with A&T as long as he could see, the future and what it holds for his ride with the ‘Aggie Pride’….Broadway to stay and not go away, at least for now………

On another note, I think George Ragsdale and Doug Williams could have been teammates during their times in Flordia, as both men played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and so did Steve Spurrier, as “The Old Ball Coach’ was the first quarterback for the Bucs…..Spurrier came to the Bucs in the NFL expansion draft from San Francisco, where he backed up the 49ers’ starting QB John Brodie……

Jeff Mills from the News and Record has all of the concrete details on this one and you can look at the breakdown, when you CLICK HERE…..

Good job by Jeff on this one and many of my details came off of his lead, but much of the info on my end came from upstairs, if you know what I mean…..It helps to have total recall and you will get most of your stuff correct and I used to really read that newspaper close, as I ate my breakfast before school each morning, back in the day…..

Let’s say we came home ‘Money’ on this one and we will keep an eye on the Aggies, as they get set to host the Elon Phoenix this Saturday……

George Ragsdale’s son, Marcus Ragsdale, was the quarterback at Dudley back in the day and may have made it as an wide receiver for the A&T Aggies……

  1. Doug was quite fortunate to be able to go back to his alma mata twice, with quite different results.George never was nothing but a bandaid for his alma mata. Here’s hoping he really finally gets a much deserved opportunity at Grambling .
