Former Heavyweight Boxing Champ Ken Norton Sr. dead at age 70

I remember watching Norton beat Ali, back when I was 13 years old and it was like he had come out of nowhere to defeat the Champ….I also remember seeing him in a few western movies wearing a cowboy hat and that didn’t seem to fit his overall persona all that well…Like many of the other great athletes, Ken Norton Sr. is gone…Dead at age 70…

Ken Norton Sr., a former heavyweight boxing champion who defeated Muhammad Ali in 1973, then lost in the rematch later that year, died Wednesday at a hospital in Arizona where he had been undergoing rehabilitation since suffering a stroke last year, according to his friend and manager Patrick Tenore. Norton was 70 and had congestive heart failure.

  1. 70 is really young!! He was a heck of a fighter in his day. He did not have the finesse of Ali, but he could punch. My roommate in the Navy fought him in San Diego for the HW championship, and he told me that Norton was as quick as Stevenson from Cuba who was a lefty (both knocked him out out in the 1st round).
