Greensboro College Men’s Soccer Wins USA South Opener

GREENSBORO, NC—Greensboro College Pride men’s soccer team defeated conference new comer Covenant on Friday afternoon by a final score of 2-0.

In the first half of play, Greensboro had many opportunities to put a tally on the board, but was unable to do so. The Pride’s best chance of the first half, came in the 15thminute when Earl Floyd put Greensboro’s first shot on goal, that cause Scotts goal tender to make a diving stop. After that stop, Greensboro took control of the loose ball, as Drew Clukey missed the frame just high. The game would go into the half all tied up at 0-0.

After the break, The Pride struck first just six minutes into the new half. George Dimopoulos put a long ball over the top, fidning the foot of Shaun Watt putting Greensboro up 1-0. The score remained the same, until The Pride found the back of the net in the 84th minute when Juan Vivas found Craig Gage extending the lead to 2-0.

Greensboro College held the edge in shots 20-9, and Manbi Nyepon collected three saves for The Pride.

Following the game, Head Coach John Trice had this to say, “Covenant College is a very well-coached, solid team and I am very proud of our guys for getting the result. When our team works as hard as they did today, particularly some of the guys that came off the bench, we can be very successful. Our focus now goes to regeneration and preparation for another tough conference match Sunday.”

Greensboro will move to 3-2-2 overall on the young season, and 1-0 in USA South play. On the other side of the ball, Covenant fell to 4-2-2 overall and 0-1 in the USA South. The Pride will return to action, on Sunday when they travel to Fayetteville, NC to take on the Monarchs of Methodist University. Game time is set for 1 PM.
