Greensboro College Pride Football Rushes Over Apprentice

NEWPORT NEWS, VA—The Greensboro College Pride football team defeated Apprentice School first win of the 2013 season, behind Warren Scott’s big day with 149 yards rushing on 30 carries.

Greensboro College got on the board first capping a 12 play 91 yard drive when Ryan Throndset hit tight end Tripp Honeycutt for a seven yard touchdown for the only score of the quarter. After the point after attempt, Greensboro had a 7-0 lead in the game.

To start the second quarter of play, The Builders would strike from three yards out to tie the game at seven all. After that drive, The Pride would get back ahead for good when Warren Scott rushed five yards for his first of two touchdowns on the day. Two drives later, Cortez Vernon rushed for a one yard touchdown run to give Greensboro a commanding 21-7 lead after the extra point. The Pride defense would come to live and force The Builders to punt the ball with just over a minute to go in the half and got the ball on their own 26 yard line. The offense, would take a quick knee to make the score going into the half 21-7.

The start of the second half, proved to be a defensive battle before Apprentice punched the ball in with at 19 yard touchdown pass with 1:35 to go in the 3rd quarter to make the score 21-14.

Greensboro would get back on the board five minutes into the fourth quarter, when Cortez Vernon rushed from seven yards out to give The Pride a 27-14 lead after a Mark Bush extra point. Apprentice would come right back on their next drive and make the game a one possession game with another 19 yard touchdown pass. That would not phase Greensboro, as Or’Shon Sampson intercepted The Builders quarterback to give The Pride great field position on the Apprentice three yard line. Greensboro would need just three plays to cap off the scoring with Warren Scott’s final touchdown of the day from nine yards out.

The Greensboro College defense was led by sophomore linebacker Mart Grinton , who had a team high eight tackles including four for a loss.

With the win, Greensboro moves to 1-2 overall on the season. Greensboro will return to action on Saturday, September 28 when they travel to LaGrange, GA to face off with The Panthers of LaGrange. Kickoff for the game is set for 1:00pm.
