HPU Women’s Volleyball: Chelsea Davis Posts 21 Kills In Loss To Davidson

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Junior Chelsea Davis led the High Point University volleyball team with 21 kills and a .309 attack percentage in a 3-0 loss to Davidson in the final match of the HPU Classic on Saturday at the Millis Center. The outside hitter was named to the HPU Classic All-Tournament Team.

“Chelsea Davis continues to play amazing volleyball for us,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “The rest of the team needs to rise to her level, which I know they are capable of. Once they do we will win a lot of volleyball games.”

Davis has posted double-digit kills in the last five matches. She also hit .309 with five blocks and five digs in Saturday’s match. Davis averaged 6.11 kills per set in the HPU Classic, hitting .313 with 24 digs and nine total blocks.

Sophomore Annemarie Chin tallied a match-high 21 digs and sophomore Wavie Chin came up with 11 digs.

Hannah Rau led Davidson with 13 kills and 16 digs and Carolina Brown added 11 kills and 14 digs. Both were named to the HPU Classic All-Tournament Team.

It was a close two-point set for the Panthers who lost the first frame 25-23. Davidson opened up its biggest lead of the set, 23-19 but the Panthers didn’t go down without a fight. Davis had a kill to make it 23-20, and another to fight off set point and get HPU within one of the Wildcats, 24-23. Emily Franklin ended the set with her second kill of the night to secure the 25-23 win for Davidson.

HPU continued to fight in the second set, battling back from a 21-12 deficit to get back within two points, 24-22. The Panthers went on a four-point run with junior Katie Vincent at the service line, to cut the lead to 23-16. Senior Maddie Simpson also served the Panthers to a three-point run and back-to-back kills by Davis made it a 24-22 Davidson lead. Tindall Sewell was able to put down a kill to end the frame.

Davis had eight kills on 15 swings in the third set, but the Wildcats were able to hold on for the 25-20 win. The Panthers were once again within one point late in the frame, trailing 20-19 on a kill by junior Chelsea Blanford. Brown sided out for Davidson with a kill and went back to the service line to lead the Wildcats to a 25-20 win. She had two aces in the final five-point run.

Simpson finished the night with 27 assists and seven digs. Vincent added five kills and two blocks while freshman Savannah Angel chipped in two kills and five blocks.

High Point will travel to inter-Triad rival UNC Greensboro on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match with the Spartans.
