Sides Finishes Eighth To Lead HPU Men’s Golf In Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Jack Sides posted a top-ten finish to lead the High Point University men’s golf team at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Myrtle Beach National in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Panthers finished fifth with a team score of 585.

“We are having some great moments on the course,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “But we are also struggling at times and that will happen with a very young team. Jack Sides and David Long both had rounds under par and they will only continue to get better as the season goes on. I am pleased with the progress our team is showing.”

Sides finished tied for eighth with a 144 for the tournament. He carded a one-under 71 on Tuesday to move from 18th to a five-way tie for eighth in the final round.

Sophomore McKay Tye carded a 74 on Tuesday to finish two-over par with a 146. Tye finished tied for 10th with teammate David Long. Long followed up his two-under 70 in the first round with a 76 on Tuesday.

Freshman Phil Oweida went 75-74 in the tournament and placed 28th with his final score of 149. Sophomore Tommy Dillon took four strokes off his opening round score of 80 to card a 76 and finish with a 156, good for 39th place.

Juniors LJ Georgetti and Tyler Engel played as individuals at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate. Georgetti carded a 151 (77-74) and Engel shot a 162 (81-81).

Southern Wesleyan won the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate with a team score of 570 (291-279). Appalachia State finished second, followed by Presbyterian College and Gardner-Webb. Casey Komline from Appalachian State was the individual winner with a 140 (69-71).

The men’s golf team is off until Oct. 5 when the Panthers will play in a tri-match with Gardner-Webb and Radford at the site of the Big South Tournament, The Patriot at Grande Harbour in Ninety Six, S.C.
