GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College’s men’s golf team dropped one spot to 14th in the second Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll of the fall 2013 season released today. The rankings were made by members of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and included tournaments through Sept 17. Methodist University moved into the top spot with 368 points and six first-place votes. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges secured second, claiming 322 points and three first-place nods. Emory University and the University of Texas-Tyler round out the top four.
The Quakers tied for second with Wittenberg University last week at the Tournament Town Championship Preview at Grandover Resort. Only Illinois Wesleyan University, ranked seventh in the new rankings, finished ahead of Guilford. Quakers’ rookie Tanner Gross finished three strokes out of first in a share of fifth place with a three-over-par 73-74-147. Travis Tolbert had the Quakers’ second-best finish (T16) after shooting 75-75-150.
Fourth-year head coach Corey Maggard’s squad is ranked second in the Sept. 25 Golfstat.com Division III Head-to-Head Ratings. The Quakers are playing in the Gordin Collegiate Classic in Columbus, Ohio, Monday and Tuesday.
